Prynne wears it on her breast as if to say, "Thanks for the mammaries". Set in Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony during the years 1642 to 1649, the novel tells the story of Hester Prynne who conceives a daughter through an affair and then struggles to create a new life of repentance and dignity. The quieter parts of the story also shine, such as when Pearl and Hester are in the woods or alone together. Escape the Present with These 24 Historical Romances. The city had been founded only a decade before this novel is set. This is my new favourite way to experience the story thanks to the expert way the story has been condensed for the manga. Perhaps the best Scarlet Letter adaptation available. Why is Christianity so lasciviously in bed with hypocrisy? However, I'm not sure if I'd be compelled to read the original even at this point as the writing is full of thous, dosts and whences, which I don't need in my life. I've read "The House of Seven Gables" by Hawthorne and absolutely abhorred it so I had no intentions of ever reading this novel or anything others by Hawthorne (though I think "A Wonder-Book for Boys and Girls" is one o the best books of Greek mythology ever written). I would recommend this book for middle schoolers and up.

Craig Russell is known for both his collaborations with best-selling author Neil Gaiman (The Sandman story “Ramadan”) and adaptations of Gaiman’s works, such as “Coraline” and “Sandman: The Endless,” all of which makes Russell an inspired choice to adapt The Scarlet Letter. This is written in Japanese style, so you have to begin at "the end" and read backwards through the book - from the last page to the first, and from the top right of the page to the bottom left, completely contrary to how we westerners typically read a book. Chillingworth is actually Hester’s husband, but no one knows his real identity. It shows how Christians were (and even today still are in too many instances) hypocritical to their roots, and while you may rail at that, claiming that this is fiction, not a documentary, the fact remains that there isn’t a single thing depicted in the novel which has not actually happened in real life - and which continues to happen even today. Warning! At this point in the story, Prynne has paid three penalties for this same 'crime': confessing and standing for three hours on the town scaffold, time in jail, and the permanent wearing o' the A.
